MOZAMBIQUE\u2019S natural gas bounty, coupled with the country\u2019 s massive coal deposits, are set to transform the previously impoverished nation, and the region, in ways few can predict.<\/p>\n

There are concerns that the buzz around Mozambique\u2019s hydrocarbons, largely located off its remote northern coast, could attract the wrong kind of attention and open it up to piracy and other criminal networks operating on the high seas.<\/p>\n

“I would not be surprised if the criminal element weren\u2019t paying attention to the developments here on this coast and getting ready to act,” said head of defence economics at Washington\u2019s Africa Centre for Strategic Studies Assis Malaquais.<\/p>\n
