{"id":2688,"date":"2014-06-15T13:59:30","date_gmt":"2014-06-15T06:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/?p=2688"},"modified":"2014-06-15T13:59:30","modified_gmt":"2014-06-15T06:59:30","slug":"comoros-bans-bring-back-our-girls-march","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/west-africa\/nigeria\/comoros-bans-bring-back-our-girls-march\/","title":{"rendered":"Comoros bans bring back our girls march."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The majority Muslim island nation of the Comoros has banned a march over the kidnapping of over 200 Nigerian schoolgirls by Islamic extremists, amid accusations the government wants to dodge religiously sensitive issues.<\/p>\n<p>Officials in the capital Moroni rejected a request to march from children\u2019s rights group Maeecha, saying \u201cit is not possible to grant you permission to walk in the streets of the capital, for reasons related to the circulation of traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But NGOs accused the government of the Indian Ocean island of trying to silence debate on the actions of Islamist radicals.<\/p>\n<p>The non-governmental Solidarity Association of the Indian Ocean Islands had appealed to the government to speak out on the kidnapping by the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, but met a wall of silence.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cAuthorities that I consulted just after the kidnapping told me to wait because according to them it concerned a sensitive topic, religion,\u201d said the group\u2019s Soilha Said Mdahoma.<\/p>\n<p>Boko Haram, whose name loosely translates as \u201cWestern education is forbidden\u201d, kidnapped the girls from their dormitory on April 14, has claimed they converted to Islam and has threatened to sell them&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sunnewsonline.com\/new\/?p=64462\" title=\"Read more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n<p>South Africa Today Africa News &#8211;
