U.S. Ambassador Christopher J. Lamora\u00a0visited\u00a0Bamenda\u00a0from January 23-24,\u00a0marking his\u00a0first visit to the Northwest Region as U.S.\u00a0ambassador and his\u00a0second\u00a0since\u00a0serving\u00a0in Cameroon\u00a032\u00a0years\u00a0ago as a young diplomat.\u00a0 During the\u00a0visit, Ambassador Lamora\u00a0stated:\u00a0\u201cIt was very important to come to the Northwest Region and to Bamenda in particular to hear the perspectives of a broad range of people on the ground, including Cameroonian government officials, faith leaders, civil society and media representatives, and key U.S. government health and humanitarian partners. \u00a0These engagements will help shape and enhance our cooperation with all stakeholders to support the people of Bamenda, the Northwest Region, and Cameroon as a whole as they work towards a more peaceful and prosperous future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

During the course of his visit, Ambassador Lamora\u00a0met\u00a0with Governor of the Northwest Region Adolphe\u00a0Lele\u00a0Lafrique,\u00a0Mayor of Bamenda Paul\u00a0Tambeng\u00a0Achobong, Regional Delegate for National Security\u00a0Elung\u00a0Njume\u00a0Wilson\u00a0Nijkang, and President of the Regional Assembly\u00a0Fru\u00a0Angwafor\u00a0III,\u00a0who shared their perspectives on the security, economic, and humanitarian situation in the region. \u00a0The\u00a0Ambassador\u00a0also\u00a0met with\u00a0journalists based in Bamenda\u00a0as well as faith and\u00a0civil society leaders\u00a0from various locales in the Northwest Region,\u00a0and\u00a0expressed\u00a0his\u00a0appreciation and admiration for\u00a0the\u00a0key\u00a0role they play\u00a0in\u00a0contributing to good governance, the promotion and protection of human rights, and economic growth.<\/p>\n

Reaffirming\u00a0the\u00a0U.S. government\u2019s longtime\u00a0support in\u00a0the\u00a0health and humanitarian sectors,\u00a0Ambassador Lamora\u00a0met\u00a0with United Nations agencies and NGO partners at the UN joint compound. \u00a0He also\u00a0separately visited the\u00a0International Medical Corps (IMC), which receives\u00a0over 1.5 billion FCFA\u00a0per year from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to strengthen primary health care in remote communities affected by the crisis in the Northwest Region. \u00a0Through this USAID-IMC collaboration, approximately 57,000 people in the Northwest Region have access to maternal and reproductive health as well as nutrition assistance.<\/p>\n

Underscoring the United States\u2019\u00a0long-standing\u00a0commitment to combatting HIV\/AIDS, the Ambassador visited the\u00a0Nkwen Baptist\u00a0Health Center, which is supported by the U.S. President\u2019s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). \u00a0At the hospital, the Ambassador was able to observe first-hand how U.S. partnership is fostering improved diagnosis, care, and treatment of HIV in addition to educating the local community on HIV prevention.<\/p>\n

In a highlight of his visit to Bamenda, the Ambassador met with the multi-NGO team implementing the Consolidating Systems and Services for the Management of Orphans and Vulnerable children (CoSMO) project, as well as a number of children and families whom the CoSMO project has benefitted. \u00a0Funded through USAID and implemented by the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon, the five-year, 20 billion FCFA project seeks to improve the well-being of children and families affected by HIV\/AIDS. \u00a0In 2023, the project reached nearly 7,000 orphans and vulnerable children in the Northwest Region.<\/p>\n
