Women\u2019s Cooperatives in Agadir, Morocco.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Known as the \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/un-chronicle\/cultivation-argan-tree-can-help-combat-climate-change-support-sustainable-development\" rel=\"noopener\">tree of life\u201d<\/a>, Morocco\u2019s native Argan tree is critical to the economic and cultural well-being of millions of people. The export of Argan oil, used worldwide for cooking and cosmetics, has become a multi-billion-dollar industry. Meanwhile, local Moroccan communities use the oil to treat illnesses, and the tree\u2019s fruit, leaves and seed pulp to feed livestock.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Fadma Haddi is one woman whose fate has become intertwined with that of the Argan forests near her home in Agadir, Morocco. She makes her living cultivating Argan trees and harvesting their nuts to produce oil.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Women like her have practised\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/argania-day#:~:text=The%20argan%20tree%20(Argania%20spinosa,in%20arid%20and%20semiarid%20areas.\" rel=\"noopener\">sustainable harvesting<\/a>\u00a0for generations \u2013 and these traditions have only become more important as the global climate crisis takes grip. While Argan trees are hardy and can withstand drought and severe heat, Morocco\u2019s forests have\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/2022\/03\/347673\/climate-change-will-shrink-moroccos-argan-industry\" rel=\"noopener\">begun to shrink<\/a>\u00a0as temperatures have risen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This deterioration has the potential to compromise the lives and futures of the women and girls who tend the forests. \u201cWhen climate disaster strikes, it&#8217;s a disaster for women and girls,\u201d\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CsChwLxMT1K\/\" rel=\"noopener\">said UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Escalating temperatures, escalating threats for women and girls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/esaro.unfpa.org\/en\/publications\/sexual-and-reproductive-health-and-rights-national-climate-policy\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a>\u00a0by UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, climate crises raise the risk that gender-based violence will occur, that access to essential sexual and reproductive health services will be challenging or suspended altogether, \u00a0and that maternal health outcomes will worsen.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Morocco, the climate-related risks posed to Argan forests also jeopardize the income women and girls derive from them, heightening the risk that many will slide into poverty, drop out of school or become vulnerable to violence and harmful practices like child marriage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To counter this, UNFPA supported the launch of a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/morocco.unfpa.org\/fr\/news\/lancement-de-%C2%AB-we-men-engaged-change-%C2%BB-la-premi%C3%A8re-coalition-au-maroc-sur-le-genre-population\" rel=\"noopener\">coalition of NGOs<\/a>\u00a0to help women and girls take on challenges associated with climate change. Fadma&#8217;s cooperative is a member of the coalition and a union of Argan oil harvesters in Agadir. Local cooperatives like Fadma\u2019s employ tens of thousands of women to cultivate the trees and extract their oil.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe initiative is focused squarely on women and girls that are at risk of being left behind, especially girls that are not studying or working and living in rural areas,\u2019 said UNFPA\u2019s assistant representative for Morocco, Abdel-Ilah Yaakoubd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt puts a special emphasis on the big issues that affect them \u2013 from social protection to jobs and climate change \u2013 and it aims to improve their skills and opportunities in life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Growing together\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before Ms. Haddi joined the women\u2019s cooperative, she did not make a regular income.
