The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa\u00a0this week\u00a0inaugurated the first\u00a0cohort\u00a0of\u00a0candidates of\u00a0the\u00a0Mwele\u00a0Malecela\u00a0Mentorship (MMM) Programme\u00a0for Women in\u00a0Neglected\u00a0Tropical\u00a0Diseases\u00a0(NTDs),\u00a0established\u00a0in 2022\u00a0in honour of the visionary behind the 2030 WHO road map for NTDs, and one of Africa\u2019s most respected scientists.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

WHO Regional Director for Africa,\u00a0Dr Matshidiso Moeti,\u00a0announced the opening of applications for the new programme\u00a0in honour of\u00a0Dr\u00a0Mwele\u00a0Malecela,\u00a0who\u00a0passed away\u00a0last year. Dr\u00a0Malecela, a former director\u00a0of Neglected Tropical Diseases\u00a0in WHO\/HQ and Director of the Office of the Regional Director in WHO\/AFRO, was\u00a0the first\u00a0female\u00a0director-general of Tanzania\u2019s National Institute for Medical Research, a pioneer in the fight against NTDs.<\/p>\n

The programme is\u00a0focused on\u00a0mid-career African women living in African countries and working in the\u00a0area of\u00a0NTDs. It aims to help them overcome barriers to realizing their full potential, paving the way to them becoming leaders and champions for NTD elimination at\u00a0home and internationally.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0selected mentees\u00a0have undergone a rigorous selection process, considering their achievements, potential and deep commitment to continuous learning. I encourage them to approach this experience with an open mind, a hunger for knowledge and a willingness to step outside their comfort zone,\u201d Dr Moeti said.<\/p>\n

The inaugural cohort of\u00a010\u00a0women are:\u00a0Ms\u00a0Chinenye\u00a0Bembir,Dr\u00a0Basiliana\u00a0Emidi,\u00a0Ms Deborah Mensah,\u00a0Ms\u00a0Rolayo\u00a0Toyin Emmanuel,\u00a0Ms Lydia\u00a0Mosi,\u00a0Ms Christine\u00a0Wanjala,\u00a0Ms\u00a0AlvineChristelle\u00a0Kengne,\u00a0Ms Faraja\u00a0Serephin\u00a0Lyamuya,\u00a0Dr Rose Elisabeth\u00a0Peme\u00a0Monteil,\u00a0and Dr\u00a0Nissou\u00a0Ines\u00a0Dossa. They will each receive a 2023 stipend of\u00a0US$\u00a015\u00a0000\u00a0to foster their\u00a0leadership and skills\u00a0development\u00a0journeys.<\/p>\n

With a long-term commitment from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the programme will fittingly run through to 2030 to reflect Dr\u00a0Malecela\u2019s\u00a0own commitment to the 2030 WHO NTD road map. Other supporters include\u00a0Menttium, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the END Fund.\u00a0<\/p>\n
