Zimbabwe prosecutor general Tomana arrested yet again

Suspended Zimbabwe prosecutor general Johannes Tomana appears to be in trouble and is understood to have been arrested yet again.

Tomana is said to have been arrested on Friday on charges of criminal abuse of office, with the charges emanating from decisions he allegedly made as far back as 2008.

The African News Agency (ANA) understands he decided to drop charges against road transport company Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) senior officials in 2008, including former Zupco chief executive officer Bright Matonga and then board chairman Charles Nherera.

Tomana’s arrest came a day after President Robert Mugabe suspended him and appointed a three-member tribunal to investigate his conduct as a public officer.

After suspending the state’s chief lawyer, Mugabe on Thursday appointed retired high court judge Moses Chinhengo to chair a tribunal to investigate Tomana’s fitness to continue in office. The other two members on the tribunal are Emmanuel Magade and Melania Matshiya.

Mugabe then appointed advocate Ray Goba as acting prosecutor general until completion of the tribunal’s investigations. The Chinhengo tribunal will also investigate Tomana after he allegedly defied court orders and abused his official powers when he withdrew sabotage charges against two military officers from a group of four allegedly caught in a botched attempt to bomb Mugabe’s Gushungo Dairy plant early this year.

Tomana is said to have instructed a subordinate in his office Michael Mugabe to allow the state to make a plea bargain with two of the quartet alleged to have planned to bomb the plant.
