Fit Mugabe can go on till 2023: Zanu PF Youth League

President Robert Mugabe is still “physically and mentally fit” that he can still go on as Zimbabwe’s leader until 2023, the Zanu PF Youth League has said.

The ruling party’s youth wing’s secretary Kudzanayi Chipanga said this while addressing journalists in Harare Thursday.

He said while they accepted and supported First Lady Grace Mugabe’s call on her husband to name his successor as a wing they were not going to “stampede his Excellency” into doing so.

“He (Mugabe) can even go up to 2023, but when he then feels that he needs to step down due to various reasons, yes we have given him that leverage as the party to guide the party when it comes to choosing his own successor..,” said Chipanga.

He claimed that there were no signs that Mugabe was already incapacitated.

“Our president is still strong as you can see him addressing his party supporters for more than an hour when a need arises. He is still fit to execute his duties. Mentally and physically he is switched on,” said Chipanga.

He went on, “Come 2018 elections we have a candidate and he is President Robert Mugabe.”

Chipamga’s claims come as Mugabe is often seen asleep as soon as he sat down during public meetings. On many occasions, he is seen being helped to the rostrum and almost falling down.
