New hospitals, clinics and health centres to be built in Namibia before 2023

Four modern referral hospitals, 60 new health centres and 350 clinics are to be built in Namibia before 2023.

This was confirmed by Ministry of Health and Social Services Permanent Secretary Andrew Ndishishi, who told Namibian Sun the referral hospitals will be built in the Kavango East, Oshikoto, Otjozondjupa and Erongo regions.

He did not disclose the total cost of the projects, but did say that they had been budgeted for during the current and next financial years.

The construction of the new facilities comes as a welcome boost for the public health sector, which has been under fire for several years due to cases of negligence and overcrowded conditions. A Presidential Commission Inquiry report, released last year, also highlighted a shocking lack of facilities and medical equipment around the country.

The report also recommended the upgrading, renovation and construction of new hospitals to accommodate the growing population and alleviate the pressure of medical staff at current State facilities.
