Namibia – As a group of civil society organisations protested outside, Swapo and the opposition fired repeated verbal missiles at each other inside the National Assembly yesterday, where proposed sweeping amendments to the Constitution were debated.
The demonstrators were calling on the nation to boycott the November elections if the controversial third Constitutional Amendment Bill is not withdrawn for public input.
The group also threatened to boycott other State services – a throwback to 1959 when black Namibians boycotted municipal services of the former apartheid regime over forced removals.
There were also serious calls on President Hifikepunye Pohamba not to sign the Bill if both Houses of Parliament pass it without the requested public consultation…
