German MP sparks reparations anger

Angry OvaHerero and Nama communities have vowed to continue demanding reparations for colonial atrocities, saying they do not fear the close relationship between the Swapo government and Germany.

This follows a remark by visiting German parliamentarian Doris Barnett, who said yesterday that “there will be no discussions backwards” – indicating that they consider the subject of reparations closed.

Ida Hoffmann, who is the chairperson of the Nama Genocide Technical Committee, said this remark will not deter them from continuing to ask for reparations.

Barnett said Germany will invest in the future of Namibia and its young people to “overcome the past”.

“We did not ask for that money which they have given to help develop the country. That has nothing to do with reparations,” Hoffmann fumed after hearing what the German MP had said.

According to Hoffmann, the affected communities will not be intimidated by the relationship between Swapo and the German government, as they “only fear God”…
