Farm attacks and farm murders escalating in Namibia

Seven farm attacks occurred this year in Namibia so far and three farmers were killed.

The Namibia Agricultural Union (NAU) is deeply concerned about the increase in violence in rural areas in the country. This comes after the murders of Mr. Peter Jakob of Grootfontein and Mr. Gerald Leitner of Hochfeld.

The murder of Andre Maier, a tour guide in the Zambezi area, as well as the attack on a lodge in the vicinity of Omaruru last month is an indication that farms and rural areas are now targeted by criminals, according to a statement of the NAU.

Namibia is one of the safest countries in Africa, but the increase in attacks and crimes at lodges in remote areas are doing the country’s reputation huge damage, says. Derek Wright, president of the NAU. The organization also calls on the Namibian government and police to make rural and farm safety a priority matter.

The NAU also called on his government to do everything possible to prevent the situation worsening. The priority matter were also asked to make their own safety a priority, to keep their eyes open for possible illegal activities in their areas and to report them to the police.
