Life in Mozambique

By Mohammad Alshereda

The Republic of Mozambique is a country located in the south of Africa. Maputo is the capital city. Mozambique gained its independence in 1975. Its population is about 30 million. There are about 10 ethnic groups in Mozambique.

The main 3 ethnic groups are:

  • Makua (about 70% of them follow traditional religions and the rest are Muslims).
  • Ndau-Shangaan.
  • Shangaan.

The president of Mozambique is Filipe Nyusi who came to office in 2015. He is a member of The Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) which has fought for independence since 1962.

Although there are sights of modernity there, Mozambique is on the top 10 poorest countries in the world. A lot of people suffer from extreme poverty and are in desperate need for help. Corruption seems to be the cancer of most African countries because their lands are rich with resources especially minerals but that is never reflected in the lives of common people.

Some mining companies make deals with the government but it is very easy to see that people of Mozambique are left out of the equation. I believe that there is no future for a nation who cast out its common people.

I personally encourage anyone who is willing to give to the poor and needy not to forget about people in Mozambique.
