The leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement faction (SLM-MM) has called on the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, to stop the “ongoing genocide in Darfur”.

The Sudan Tribune reported that Minni Minnawi made the appeal on Thursday after congratulating Trump on his presidential victory.

One of Trump’s foreign policy advisers, Walid Phares, said the future president would support Sudanese in the marginalised areas and would work to implement the decisions of the International Criminal Court (ICC) against President Omar Al Bashir.

“On behalf of the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) I would like to seize this opportunity to extend to you my sincere congratulations for being elected as president of the United States of America (USA),” said Minnawi in a congratulatory message seen by the Tribune.

Minnawi further reminded Trump that he was the president-elect of a country that had always stood in support of legitimate causes and that would include the continued support for victims of “genocide and ethnic cleansing by the Sudanese government on a racial basis” for more than a decade.

Darfurians “are anxiously waiting to see your administration act swiftly to move and put an end to this ongoing genocide,” he said.

Minnawi also called on Trump to follow through on previous promises made by former US President George Bush, and outgoing President Barack Obama, to save Darfurians from Khartoum’s “genocidal regime”.
