Kenya’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko on Monday (August 4th) called on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo to combine efforts to investigate land acquisition in Lamu County.
“It appears that investigations into the above-mentioned matter are being carried out by your respective institutions separately,” Tobiko said according to Kenya’s Capital FM.
Tobiko said he already appointed a team of prosecutors to assist with the probe and ordered them to compile and submit a report to his office for review.
President Uhuru Kenyatta said last week that the government would revoke ownership of nearly 500,000 acres of land acquired in Lamu between 2011 and 2012 through “dubious and corrupt means”, and charged Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Housing and Urban Development Charity Ngilu with implementing the directive.
Since then, political leaders and residents have raised concerns that the proposed approach may not address ongstanding disputes over land ownership in the Coast region.
