Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor Patrick Njoroge has scooped the Global Markets “Central Bank Governor of the Year Award for Sub-Saharan Africa”

Njoroge received the award on the margins of the IMF/World Bank meetings in Washington, DC over the weekend, a statement from CBK said.

Global Markets noted that Dr. Njoroge received the award for his efforts to “curb inflation, cleaning up of the banking sector and his drive to pursue a new policy of openness and transparency”.

Njoroge was commended for his stewardship of Kenya’s financial sector and vocal support for innovation in the industry.

The Governor said he was “deeply moved” to receive the award adding that the award “recognizes and validates our actions in a difficult environment”.

He thanked the Deputy Governor as well as the CBK staff and other fellow Governors for their support.

“Coming just three weeks after the CBK 50th anniversary celebrations, I dedicate this award to CBK staff – they are CBK’s greatest assets, and are transforming it to a world class modern Central bank,” Njoroge said upon receiving the award.

In May this year, Njoroge received the Central Bank of the Year Award under the patronage of the African Development Bank (AfDB). He was appointed Governor in 2015.

Under his tenure commercial bank interest rates have come down while CBK as regulator has improved supervision of the banking sector.
