MONUSCO strongly condemns the Mayi Mayi militia attack in Butembo

Maman S. Sidikou, the Special Representative of the Secretary General and Head of MONUSCO, strongly condemns the Mayi-Mayi militia attack on several areas of Butembo, Beni territory, in North Kivu province, on 19 December.

The attack resulted in one member of National Police killed, one MONUSCO peacekeeper killed and two peacekeepers injured. SRSG Sidikou expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased as well as to the governments of DRC and South Africa. He also wishes the injured a quick recovery.

Underlining that attacks against peacekeepers are considered a war crime and that perpetrators will be held accountable, Maman Sidikou reaffirms that this heinous attack will not undermine the commitment and determination of MONUSCO to fulfil its protection of civilians and neutralization of armed groups mandate in support of the security forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
