Chinese, Filipinos and Pakistanis leaving Libya in droves

Tripoli – The Chinese have been leaving Libya by the hundreds over the past two weeks because of the violence, and now the Filipinos and Pakistanis are following suit.

According to China’s Ambassador to Libya Li Zhiguo, some 878 Chinese nationals have evacuated Libya since 13 July, 75 percent of the 1,200 workers in the country.

Some of the Chinese workers have evacuated overland via Ras Jedir Tunisia border crossing, while others have exited the country on boats traveling to Greece and France. Zhiguo said that around 264 workers in the steel manufacturing industry would fly out of the Misrata airport in the coming days.

However, dozens of workers, particularly those employed by Huawei Techonlogies, have opted to stay. The Chinese Embassy has prepared a contingency plan for them, Zhiguo added.
