Spokesman for the Renamo movement in Mozambique detained

A spokesman for the opposition Renamo movement in Mozambique has been detained by the police. Antonio Muchanga was taken into police custody shortly after the latest round of meetings on Monday with ruling party officials negotiating political reconciliation through dialogue ahead of elections in October.

Muchanga is a member of the Council of State which is charged with advising the presidency on the process of political dialogue which has stalled since last year in the wake of hostilities between government troops and Renamo whose jungle base in the centre of the country was overran.

His appointment to the council had conferred on him diplomatic immunity.

The government has not explained the reason for his detention, an incident which underlines tensions between the ruling Frelimo and its former civil war enemy Renamo over a host of unresolved issues including a fairer redistribution of the mineral-rich country’s wealth…
