The cooperation of the public in providing information to police assisted yet again that illegal firearms and ammunition had been removed from the streets of Mitchells Plain.
On Sunday 6 August 2017, at about 02:30, Mitchells Plain SAPS members were patrolling in Simonsig Street, Westridge, Mitchells Plain when they received a complaint of a shooting. Upon their arrival at the address they spotted an male throwing something away.
While the one member went to investigate the other member kept the male under guard. Police then discovered a Glock 9mm pistol with magazine and fifteen 9mm rounds. The suspect was unable to produce a license and he was arrested for the illegal possession of firearm.
Further investigation by members led to the discovery that the firearm belonged to the brother of the suspect, who is a traffic officer. The official firearm and firearm permit were issued by WCDT. A case of theft of firearm is also being investigated by police. The suspect, a 25 year old male is expected to appear in court soon.
