Guns and drugs: Suspect nabbed with SAPS bullet proof vest, Philippi East

SAPS pursuit to seize unlicensed firearms in the province yielded positive outcomes when members attached to the Anti Gang Unit arrested a 30 year old suspect who was found in possession of n an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Howick Court, Hanover Park on Sunday 14 July 2019, at about 20:30. The vigilant members acted upon information received and conducted a search at the mentioned premises and they have found a 9mm pistol and ammunition.

Bishop Lavis SAPS members committed to their task utilised information received from the community in the early hours of Sunday morning 14 July 2019, and arrested a 25 year old suspect for possession of drugs. The members received information that drugs are kept and sold at a premises in Bitterblaar Street, Bonteheuwel. They followed up the information, searched the premises and confiscated 91 sachet filled with tik, 23 half mandrax tablets and one parcel of dagga.

In an unrelated incident on Saturday, police members attached to Bishop Lavis arrested a 19 year old male suspect who was found in possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Vlaboom Street, Bonteheuwel at about 18:10. Vigilant members were busy with crime prevention patrols when they saw two suspicious men who immediately split and fled on foot when they saw the police vehicle. The members pursuit the suspects and arrested one of them who threw an object on top of a roof in one of the premises in the area, it was recovered that it is a 9mm pistol with ammunition.

Members of Philippi East Crime Prevention Unit were busy with patrols in Sector 1 Lower Crossroads when they followed up information in Mangaung leading to an arrest of a suspect in his 30’s who was found in possession of a SAPS bulletproof vest. He was arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property.

The confiscated firearms will be sent for forensic examination in order to determine if they were used during previous reported firearms related offences. Once charged the suspects are expected to appear in the Athlone and Bishop Lavis Magistrates Courts on the mentioned charges.
