Twelve awaiting-trial prisoners escaped from two Limpopo police stations over the weekend.

Six escaped from the Mecklenburg police station’s cells and six from Tubatse, provincial spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto said.

In both cases they sawed through the wire mesh roof of the exercise room.

Acting provincial police commissioner major-general Lesiba Mashilo had ordered an investigation into both escapes.

The Tubatse six were Ernest Magabe for alleged indecent assault; Monti Shai arrested for car theft; Edward Yokoy and Tshepo Serwale who are accused of public violence; Ishmael Masehle had been nabbed for theft and Koketso Nkoana who was arrested for malicious damage to property.
