Three police officers arrested for hijacking diesel truck

JOHANNESBURG – The Brighton Beach SA Police Service (SAPS) arrested three of their own police officers for alleged involvement in the hijacking of a truck carrying diesel in Rossburg, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said the arrested followed an investigation after a diesel truck driver was accosted by six unknown men earlier this month.

“The six unknown armed men stuffed him into a vehicle boot and dumped him at Umbumbulu. A case was opened and the following day, the Durban Flying Squad recovered the truck in Jacobs Road. The arrested police officers have been linked to the hijacking, theft of diesel and other truck hijacking incidents that occurred in February 2016,” Zwane said.

He said a security guard who was found guarding the hijacked truck at Jacobs Road was arrested after he allegedly tried to shoot at members of the police flying squad. He has since appeared in court and his unlicensed firearm seized.

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said more arrests were imminent.

“The investigation will continue until all those that are involved are put behind bars and we are confident that more arrests are imminent. We will not tolerate corrupt police officers in the SAPS. Let this be a warning to others in the service that collude with criminals that your days are numbered,” she said.
