Runner left for dead after severe attack

A runner from Bloemfontein was left in freezing cold for dead on Friday early morning July 31, 2015, after she was attacked and severely assaulted with presumably a stone.

The 44-year-old woman, whose name was not known to Beeld, was attacked and robbed of her cell phone on Friday morning in Albrecht Street while she was jogging.

Beeld learned she had suffered serious head injuries after she was repeatedly struck with a stone in her face. She was robbed of her mobile phone and was thrown in a ditch next to the road.

It is believed that she usually runs in a group, but on Friday morning jogged on her own.

Const. Wendy Nkabi, police spokesperson, confirmed the incident but declined to elaborate on the issue, after the family asked that no information should be disclosed to the media. Amos Lekaba (36), a response officer at Defensor, was on his way to his vantage point, on Friday around 06:00, when a security officer approached him for help in Albrecht Street.

The security officer told Lekaba he had found a badly injured woman, and asked him to call the emergency services. Lekaba said on further investigation he found a bloodied woman.

“Her face was covered in blood and some of the blood was already dry.” He suspected she has been lying in the ditch for quite a while.
He said that while she was still conscious, she spoke very softly as she begged for help. “She kept asking us to please help her.”
It was also clear to Lekaba that she suffered a lot of pain and she shivered with cold.

The woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
