A 36-year-old man from the Northern Cape was sentenced in Colesberg magistrate court after he was convicted of the murder and rape of his 66-year-old mother on Valentine’s Day last year.
Col. Priscilla Naidu, Police spokesperson, said the man, Thabo Daniels was alone with his mother Sarah Maklepere Daniels at their home in Kuyusa on February 14, 2014, when he assaulted her.
“He beat his mother severely with a bicycle, after which he raped her,” said Naidu. An injured Maklepere reported the incident the next morning at her neighbors. The neighbors called for help, but she succumbed to her injuries before she could get medical treatment.
Thabo has since fled the scene, but was arrested on the same day.
He was charged with murder and rape and was imprisoned during the trial. He was sentenced on Wednesday to 22 years in prison for murder and eight years for rape.
