Two alleged shoplifters were robbed of their valuables by scamsters outside a supermarket in the Verulam CBD on January 10, 2017.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa were informed that the women were met by two female con artists as they were about to enter the store. The scamsters informed them that they were employed at the supermarket as cashiers. They went on to explain that they should load their trolleys with groceries to the value of R1000. When they were done they were to cash at tills were the two were stationed. The scamsters would then only scan items to the value of R500 and in return the women were to pay them R250.

The woman were asked to hand over their handbags containing their cellphones and other valuables to the con artists due to it attracting unnecessary attention to them while shopping. Once they had loaded their trolleys the women searched for the “cashiers” however they could not be located.

The women realised that they had been conned and the suspects had disappeared with their handbags.
