A two-year-old girl died and her parents were injured when their shack was shot at in Wepener, Free State police said

A two-year-old girl died and her parents were injured when their shack was shot at in Wepener, Free State police said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Sergeant Yanga Ngcukana said at around 9pm on Tuesday the shack was shot at from the outside.

“She was killed whilst she was on her mother’s back. The mother was hit by two bullets, in the chest and in the arm, and the father was hit in the arm. Eight bullet cartridges were found on the scene,” Ngcukana said.

“It is alleged that the suspect or suspects fired shots from the outside and the little girl was hit by a bullet in the head and was certified dead on the scene.”

Ngcukana said that her parents were taken to Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein for further treatment.

The motive for the shooting was not known and no arrests have been made.

“We would like to appeal to the community of Wepener to come forward with information that can ensure arrest and conviction of the perpetrator or perpetrators.”
