Free State elderly farmer brutally tortured and murdered

Hein Smith (77) of the farm Rondekom, was found by a neighbor who went to investigate after Smith’s bakkie was found abandoned outside the farm and he did not answer his phone when people tried to call him.

Police, on Sunday, confirmed the name of the Free State farmer who was brutally attacked and killed Saturday night, July 18, 2015 on his farm.

Col. Annelie Wrensch, police spokesperson, told Maroela Media the 77-year-old Hein Smith of the farm Rondekom was attacked on Saturday night, but was only found by his neighbors about 08:00 on Sunday morning.

Maroela Media reported earlier Smith was found a distance from his home where he was tied by the attackers. He was reportedly seriously injured after the attackers burned and severely assaulted him. He died shortly after his arrival at a hospital.

According to Wrensch it is believed that three men attacked him. Smith lived alone.

“Smith’s relatives were informed of his death,” Wrensch said.

“A case of murder and armed robbery is being investigated.”

Wrensch could not confirm with what Smith was burned.

Ian Cameron, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety, condemned the murder and termed it a tragedy.

“The only way we can prevent and reduce farm attacks, is to get people involved in regional security structures. Community-centered DIY security is the only way – we cannot rely on the government.”
