Former CEO of Absa detained and robbed

The former CEO of the Absa Group, Nallie Bosman, of Pretoria was kidnapped and held for hours while robbers withdrew money from his bank accounts.

According to five sources close to Bosman, he was hijacked and kidnapped about a month ago in Silverton, Pretoria. Bosman, who was Absa’s CEO between 1997 and 2004, didn’t want to talk about the incident when questioned.

Bosman said it all happened long ago, and that he had moved on and put it behind him.

According to Alwyn Noeth, former executive director of Absa and longtime colleague of Bosman, the robbers jumped into Bosman’s bakkie in Silverton and took him to a building where he was tied and detained for four hours. He was initially hit, but not seriously injured. The robbers forced Bosman to give them his bank cards and PIN codes.

They apparently threatened to shoot him if he didn’t give his ATM codes to them. While he was detained, the robbers brought another victim who was also tied.

After four hours the robbers returned Bosman’s keys and told him that he could go. A source close to Bosman, who asked not to be named, said the incident traumatized Bosman immensely.

George Fivaz, former head of police and a friend of Bosman, confirmed the incident but declined to give further details. According to the latest statistics for Silverton there was an increase in incidents of robbery between 2013 (222) and 2014 (277)
