Disabled man robbed in broad daylight

Attie van der Colff (44), a former soldier who lost his arm in a military accident, was just a block from his home in Carlitzdorp when he was robbed.

Van der Colff said: “I drew money at 14:00. On the bank slip the time was 14:03. Five minutes later, three men, whom I have noticed when I went to withdraw money, charged at me.”

“I was on my guard, but also thought they would not do anything, as it was broad daylight.

“After I withdrew the R900, the three surrounded me.

I only have one arm and could not defend myself.”

“They grabbed my bags and as I tried to stop, they only tried harder.”

Van der Colff said he can’t remember the suspects’ faces, but there were bystanders who saw what happened.

He said: “I was very shocked when I was robbed.”

“But I’m grateful that the witnesses, who saw the mugging, gave their names to the police.”

Andries Beginsel, a resident of the town, said: “Unemployment is so high that this kind of thing is on the increase.”

Capt. Bernadine Steyn, police spokesperson, said the complainant went by foot to withdraw money when three men approached him. His money was stolen and the suspects fled.

A case of theft has been opened and no arrests were made yet.
