China Town shop owner shot dead in robbery

A 70-year-old man was killed in an armed robbery at China Town in Ottery, Cape Town on Sunday, the latest in a spate of robberies targeting shopping complexes recently.

Western Cape police told News24 the robbery happened at around 15:00.

“Four unidentified suspects robbed a shop and shot and fatally wounded the owner,” Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said on Monday.

“Cases of murder, business robbery and hijacking are being investigated.”

The shop owner was reported dead on the scene and was taken to Salt River mortuary.

No arrests have been made.

Centre Manager Michelle Zhang declined to comment when contacted by News24 on Monday, citing respect for the family as the reason.

Last week, Cavendish Square mall was hit by seven armed robbers. The unidentified suspects targeted jewellery store Trigg Jewellers on Tuesday.

The centre’s manager, Brenda Bibby, confirmed the robbery had taken place and that no shots were fired.

A 27-year-old eyewitness, identified only as Arlene, said she had heard what she thought were three gunshots around 11:00.”I went out to the railing and saw three guys inside [Trigg Jewellers] busy grabbing jewellery,” she told News24.

“Another noise went off, but it was a smoke bomb. Smoke started rushing out and they ran out. They broke two glass display windows and grabbed more jewellery.”
